A meal along with a good selection of games to play? Name a better duo. The Big Box Boardgames Café is a family-friendly little restaurant that offers customers a space to play boardgames while enjoying a meal or drink with your family and friends.

Located in Roeland Street in Cape Town, South AfricaThe Big Box Café is surrounded with a number of interesting places -clothing stores, art galleries, schools, the famous Amazon, Parliament. Being in the busiest part of town -the City Centre. With two university institutions and a business block within the same street, this amazing place is bound to always have customers. The downside is that there are lots of other restaurants and cafés in the same street as well, so the competition is hot.

The café operates from Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm, Saturdays between 10am and 5pm while being closed on Sundays. The food served is bakery and café fare – customers may choose from a selection of French culinary delights such as croissants, quiches, soups and a variety of toasties. Along with everybody’s favourite of course; Tribe Coffee and it only costs around R55 for an average main meal. Takeaway is available as well for on the go customers.

However, the best part of this little café has to be the board games. Customers are allowed to play as many, time limitless board games as they like while enjoying a meal. The games are mainly imported from Europe and someone is always around to help customers understand the rules of a game. There are over 150 options in the games collection – card, wooden, strategy and family. The 4.6 star rated café is excellent for kids, adults, solo and large groups of friends or family. There is both indoor and outdoor seating so visiting in either winter or summer, customers will enjoy their experience. The café has free Wi-Fi available, so even a journalist such as myself could enjoy a meal, while doing some work and be able to play a game once I’m done to relax.

The café is available for breakfast, lunch, dinner seating and desserts. So, whether you are planning a date night and cannot find a babysitter? The Bix Box Café has got you covered. It is an amazing place for kids. I definitely would hold a birthday lunch at the café if I were planning my kids party on a budget. The kids get a good meal and have access to as many games as they want. Playing at the café is free but customers can also purchase games if they would like to with prices starting from R99. The games can be purchased in store or on the café’s website, which is used for their online shop as well.

The café opened in July 2015 and is owned by Eric and his wife Emilie. The unique café’s origins can be traced back to the Atlantic Coast of France – hence it being so French inspired. The Big Box Café is a sister restaurant to La Grosse Boite, a board games Café in the historical town of La Rochelle.

Personally, I enjoy the place. My favourite aspects are their cool monopoly menu and croissants with Nutella filling, amazing! It really is a great place to go on a group date with your friends, ideal for supper nights with the family, a cute spot for a solo lunch or even hold meetings and unwind with the team while playing a game or two. An excellent place to take your girlfriend or boyfriend on that first date. If you are shy or nervous, playing games together on a dinner date is a great way to break the ice between the two of you. Toilets are available on site as well.
